Our hero (“The Cartographer”) travels planet to planet on a quest to collect the space treasure known as Unity stones. They will unlock a secret map that will lead our hero to a long-lost ancient civilization.

Project Overview:

Our hero (“The Cartographer”) travels planet to planet on a quest to collect the space treasure known as Unity stones. They will unlock a secret map that will lead our hero to a long-lost ancient civilization.

Game Mechanics:

"Atlas" is a first-person platformer puzzle game that seamlessly blends navigation and environmental interaction. The player will start on their spaceship homebase and have the option to choose to go one of three planets. The mechanics are tailored to encourage exploration and puzzle-solving to find three Unity stones. Once visiting all three planets and collecting all three stones the player will win the game.

Concept and Inspiration:

The foundational concept of "Atlas" lies in the adventure of "The Cartographer," a space explorer on a mission to unearth Unity stones across different planets, each holding a piece of a secret map. The ultimate goal is to locate a forgotten ancient civilization. This concept is inspired by classic treasure-hunting tales and the intrigue of space exploration, weaving together the mystique of lost artifacts with the boundlessness of the cosmos.

Storyline and Narrative:

The story follows "The Cartographer" as they embark on a galactic quest to retrieve Unity stones that will compose a map leading to an ancient treasure. The narrative unfolds planet by planet, with each celestial body presenting its own lore and piece of the overarching puzzle.

Level and Environment Design:

"Atlas" presents three distinct planetary environments: a scorching lava planet, a desolate space station, and a wind-battered rocky planet. The game adopts a low-poly art style that provides a modern aesthetic while maintaining a sense of nostalgia. This choice in visual design complements the space theme and creates a coherent visual language across different planets.

Conclusion:

"Atlas" encapsulates the essence of adventure and the joy of discovery through its engaging gameplay and narrative. The development process highlighted the importance of coherent level design and responsive control systems. This project has significantly contributed to my growth as a game designer by challenging me to create an experience that is both familiar and fresh, expanding my skills in crafting immersive worlds and compelling gameplay.
